Manchester United Sound Out Nagelsmann as Carrick Faces Growing Pressure After Como Defeat

    0 0

Manchester United’s 4-1 away defeat to Como in the third round of the UEFA Champions League league phase has put Michael Carrick’s position under serious threat. According to talkSPORT, United have sounded out Julian Nagelsmann about his interest in taking charge, with the Germany head coach viewed as a potential successor to Carrick. Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler is also among the candidates.

According to talkSPORT, Manchester United have approached Nagelsmann to gauge his interest in the job, identifying him as a potential replacement for Carrick.

The heavy defeat to Como was the latest in a series of disappointing results for United, leaving Carrick under mounting pressure. The club have now gone seven consecutive matches in all competitions without a win, prompting increasing scrutiny of his position.

Following the loss to Como, captain Bruno Fernandes criticised the team's tactics, seemingly directing his frustration towards the 45-year-old manager. Calls for United to end Carrick's brief tenure as permanent head coach have grown louder, and the club appear to be preparing for the possibility of his departure.

Nagelsmann Leads the List of Potential Candidates

As speculation surrounding Carrick's future intensifies, Nagelsmann has emerged as a potential successor. According to talkSPORT, the former Bayern Munich manager has admirers among United's senior leadership. He left his position as Germany head coach this summer and is currently available.

United had already identified the 39-year-old as a leading candidate before deciding to appoint Carrick on a permanent basis in May. However, Nagelsmann was still managing Germany at the time, while Carrick's impressive performances as interim head coach towards the end of the season ultimately meant discussions with Nagelsmann did not progress further.

Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler is also highly regarded by figures within United and is viewed by the club as another possible option.

Antonio Conte, who led Napoli to the Premier League title before leaving the club in June this year, is also reportedly willing to take charge at Old Trafford. His representatives have communicated his willingness to join United, although the club have yet to show any interest in pursuing the Italian.

Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is understood to be another candidate. His current availability would make an appointment relatively straightforward. Former United sporting director Dan Ashworth had previously wanted to bring Howe to the club, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe opposed the idea at the time.

United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino and former Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna are also possible contenders, although neither is currently considered a leading candidate. Both have previously been assessed by United.

In addition, Simone Inzaghi, who led Inter Milan to the Serie A title and reached two Champions League finals, could become another available option. He is currently under pressure at Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.

There is no indication at present that United are interested in Inzaghi, but the Italian is reportedly open to the prospect of managing in the Premier League.
